Barbara Mahoney Sumner
Barbara Mahoney Sumner, 88, beloved wife of 66 years of Kenneth Forsythe Sumner of Milford came into peaceful rest on March 14, 2022. She was born November 18, 1933 in Philadelphia, PA and was the daughter of the late Bertram Wallace and Marion (Griffiths) Mahoney. She earned her BS Ed in Physical Education from Skidmore College. Barbara was an active Girl Scout for over 80 years and enjoyed spending her summers at their family home in the Adirondacks. Barbara has worked in many volunteer roles, particularly through Girl Scouts and the American Red Cross. She was instrumental in developing a Learn to Swim program for children in downtown Bridgeport; she has been an aquarium and first aid instructor for over 40 years. She guided many young girls through her cadet and senior Girl Scout troops where she introduced them to international travel, served as a gold award counselor, attended community dinners and modeled the joys of volunteerism. Barbara has won numerous volunteer leadership awards, including Thank You Badges I and II. During her “senior years”, Barbara continued to be active. When she visited Atlanta, she loved volunteering at IHM Catholic School. She enjoyed creating cards for various occasions and doing scrapbooking. She also loved going to the local theater. A force behind the distribution of Girl Scout cookies to veterans and active U.S. military, at age 87 she still personally delivered cookies to Homes for the Brave. In addition to her husband, she leaves behind her children, Barbara Osment and her husband Christopher of Atlanta, GA, Irene Alice Sumner of Milford and Stephen Sumner and his wife Erika of Centerville, VA and eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. children and his brother William Mahoney and his wife Joan of Gansevoort, NY. A Christian Burial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday March 19, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. (DIRECTLY) at Christ the Redeemer Church, 325 Oronoque Road, Milford. Internment will be private. Family and friends may call Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the GREGORY F. DOYLE FUNERAL HOME, 291 BRIDGEPORT AVENUE, MILFORD. Masks will be requested inside.
