CHAMPAGNE, Ill. – The Illinois women’s golf team kicks off spring break with a trip to Johns Island, South Carolina, for the Briar’s Creek Invitational, hosted by the College of Charleston on March 14-15.

The Briar’s Creek Invitational will be held at Briar’s Creek Golf Club, with a course set up for par 72 and playing 6,116 yards. Precision engineered and expertly maintained, Rees Jones’ masterpiece embraces the rich low country landscape and vegetation of Johns Island and the Kiawah River. Multiple tee boxes offer spectacular shots around, through and along unspoiled marsh and shore views, creating a scenic and spirited challenge for golfers of all skill levels.

There will be 18 teams competing in the 54-hole tournament with 36 holes of continuous play on Monday March 14, followed by the final 18 on Tuesday March 15. Monday will feature a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CT, with Tuesday starting with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. CT.

Along with the Illini, the 18-team field includes host Charleston, Boston College, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Colorado, East Carolina, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, NC State, Old Dominion, Penn State, Tulane, UCF and Wisconsin.

This will be Illinois’ seventh appearance at the Briar’s Creek Invitational, with the Illini recording three top-five finishes, including consecutive third-place finishes in 2017 and 2018. In the 2017 season, the Illini earned their fifth -the lowest team round in program history with a score of seven under 281 in the first round.

The Illini entered the 2021 edition of the tournament, finishing in 11th place with a tournament total of 38 out of 902, with the former standout Tristyn Nowlin and current senior Crystal Wang earning an eighth-place finish with a four out of 220 to lead the Illini.

The Illinois women’s golf team recorded their lowest 54-hole tournament score per team in program history with an 840 par 24-under par en route to a second-place finish at the ICON Invitational February 21 and 22. Just a day after tying the lowest team round in program history, the Illini broke their previous record with a 15-under 273 at the par 72, 6,247-yard Golf Club of Houston.

Senior Crystal Wang had one of the best performances in program history by posting the lowest total in the 54-hole tournament with a par 203 13-under to finish in a tie for third place. She birdied four of her first five holes on Tuesday and finished with eight on the day as she went eight-under 64 on her final round, which also marked the lowest score in one. only round in the history of the program. The senior led the field with 18 birdies in the tournament.

A classmate also made an outstanding performance Kornkamol Sukaree, who ranked fifth with a career-lowest tournament total of eight under par 208 after recording a two-under 70 in her final round. First-year student Lexanne Halama earned her second straight top-15 finish as she posted a career-best 213-under-54 total with an even par-72 on the final day of the tournament.

The Illini continue the spring slate with the Clemson Invitational, held at the Lake Keowee Reservation in Sunset, SC, March 25-27.
