Trinity appoints new CEO

Trinity Repertory Company announces Tuesday that Kate Liberman will join its leadership team as Executive Director in September 2022. Liberman is a proven leader whose work has focused on strong financial management, organizational growth and transformation, and a commitment continues to build a community focused on belonging, inclusion, diversity, equity and anti-racism. The national executive search process was guided by Arts Consulting Group.

Liberman, a native of Needham, Massachusetts, will come to Trinity Rep of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival (HVSF), where she has served as Executive Director since 2015. There she helped grow the institution with increased revenue contributed and enhanced operations. She has supported the development of numerous commissions, world premieres and Off-Broadway transfers; helped navigate organizational preservation during pandemic shutdowns; and led a strategic reopening as the first theater in New York State to restart in-person performances. She has led the business through its transformation as it will receive 98 acres of property to serve as a permanent home. While at HVSF, Kate was named a Westchester Business Council 40 under 40 Rising Star and served as President of the Cold Spring Area Chamber of Commerce.

Prior to working at HVSF, Liberman served as general manager of the Laguna Playhouse and associate general manager of the Yale Repertory Theater. She also has experience in various roles for the Berkeley Repertory Theater and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Liberman holds a master’s degree in theater management from Yale’s David Geffen School of Drama and an MBA from Yale School of Management. She is a Truman Scholar and previously served in a volunteer capacity as President of the Truman Scholars Association.

Liberman will co-direct Trinity Rep in partnership with Curt Columbus, the theater’s artistic director. Director of Development Jennifer Canole will continue as Trinity Rep’s interim chief executive until Liberman begins full-time in September.

Trinity Rep’s Vice Chairman of the Board, Kibbe Reilly, led the executive search committee, made up of 12 directors, staff and artists. Reilly said: “Early on in the search process, we were committed to selecting the best person for the position of Executive Director and that is exactly what happened. Kate Liberman is a rising star in this field and we are lucky to have her join our excellent team at Trinity Rep. I look forward to his leadership.

“Kate Liberman represents a remarkable new generation of theater leaders in America,” said Curt Columbus, Arthur P. Solomon and Sally E. Lapides, Artistic Director. “She brings an enviable range of skills to her work as a theatrical producer and institutional thinker that are essential to the health and sustainability of any cultural organization. She shares our vision of how theater work can go beyond the confines of the stage, even the building, to have a deep and lasting impact as a public square in Rhode Island and Southeastern New England. I can’t imagine finding a better partner to co-lead Trinity in its bold next phase.
